Three reasons USC QB Sam Darnold won’t be the first pick

I know three reason USC QB, Sam Darnold, won’t be the first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Just like I can give you three reasons why Dallas Cowboy quarterback, Dak Prescott, was the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Dallas Cowboys’ left tackle Tyron Smith, right guard Zack Martin, and Center Travis Frederick, are the three reasons. Smith, Martin and Frederick made first team All-Pro in 2106.

Some NFL fans think high enough of Sam Darnold they’d willingly sacrifice a losing year to draft him in 2018.

USC’s offensive line

The three reasons USC QB Sam Darnold won’t be the first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft are in the USC Offensive line. USC put two senior offensive linemen on the first team All-Pac 12 unit. And one senior offensive lineman on the second team All-Pac 12 unit.

The 2016 offensive line was a finalist for the Joe Moore award, losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

USC offensive line going into the 2016 season

USC FootballEven going into the 2016 season the USC offensive line was ranked number one in the Pac-12. ESPN ranked the USC offensive line number one on the backs of right tackle Zach Banner, left tackle Chad Wheeler and left guard Damien Mama.

Zach Banner

Zach Banner was a first team All-Pac 12 offensive lineman. Banner at 6-9 and 350 anchored the right side of the USC offensive line. The Indianapolis Colts drafted Banner in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Chad Wheeler

Chad Wheeler was a first team All-Pac 12 offensive lineman. Wheeler had 34 career starts going into his senior year at USC. At 6-6 310, Wheeler anchored the left side of the line. The New York Giants signed Wheeler to an undrafted free agent contract in 2017.

Damien Mama

Damien Mama was a second team All-Pac 12 offensive lineman. The Kansas City Chiefs signed Mama to an undrafted free agent contract in 2017.

What to expect from Darnold

The USC offensive line will just reload, right? Wrong. The offensive line is giving the USC coaching staff sleepless nights. Granted some of the frustration came from injuries, Nico Falah, Toa Lobendahn and Viane Talamaivao, that could be cleared by the season. But it shows the lack of depth to the USC offensive line.

The wide receiving corps of Deontay Burnett and Velus Jones Jr. provides Darnold with solid targets though.

Does Darnold go number one?

Right now, Sam Darnold holds a solid hold on the number one position on the NFL Draft Board. But LSU defensive end, Arden Key, could prove a bigger force than even 2016 NFL draft number one pick Myles Garrett.

But with Mitch Trubisky going number two, teams have a tendency to overdraft quarterbacks.

If that is the case cross town rival, UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen could slide into the number one pick of the 2018 NFL draft.

The 2018 NFL draft

The 2018 NFL draft will provide plenty of fireworks. If not next April, then over the 2017 college football season.
